Contact Information on Small Business Websites

UK companies and businesses breach the Companies Act and risk a fine if they do not display certain information on their websites, and also on email footers. This is in place to protect consumers and apply to all commercial websites, not just E-commerce sites, that take payments.

In an update to the Companies Act 1985 the following information must be displayed on websites:

  • company registration number
  • place of registration
  • registered office address

You may be pleased to know the information does not have to appear on every single page of your website. You can list the information on a ‘Contact Us’ page or even a ‘Legal Info’ page.

A phone number OR email address must be provided so that a consumer can contact the company, and receive a direct reply.

Information that must be included somewhere your website

The following is the minimum information that must be on a company website:

  • The name, geographic address and email address of the company.
  • The name of the organisation with which the customer is contracting must be also given, which may be different from the actual trading name. Any differences must be clearly displayed – e.g. “Potters Wands is the trading name of Potter Company Ltd.”

Clearly Display a Registered Office Address

A PO Box is NOT a geographic address; but a registered office address is. If the business is a company, the registered office address must be included.

  • If a “company”, the company’s registration number should be given and, under the Companies Act, the place of registration should be stated (e.g. “Potter Company Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales with company number 4567890″)
  • If the business is a member of a trade or professional association, membership details and registration numbers should be displayed.
  • If the business has a VAT number, it should be stated – even if the website is not being used for e-commerce transactions.
  • Prices for products/services on the website must be clear. State whether prices include tax and/or delivery costs.

What is the Difference between a Company and a Business?

A company is a legal entity that is created through legal means. A business is a way of making money. You do not have to be a company to run a business, lots of people work and earn money without having a formal “company”.

Meta Tags and Keywords Explained

To a search engine a web page will look completely different than it does to you. Search engines are not capable of visually looking at your page.  They will trawl through the raw code of your pages, not seeing the pretty design and they will not know what a photograph or an image contains, unless we tell them.  This is why we use keywords heavily throughout web copy, and also use “tags” and “keywords” within the pages; to let the Search Engine know what the page is about.

What are Meta-Tags?

A meta tag is a line of code that contains important information about a web page.  A meta tag is in the “back” of the page and cannot be seen by your audience.  There are two well known meta tags, which everyone talks about – meta description tags and meta keyword tags.

What are Meta Keywords and Meta Description Tags?

The meta tags in your page would look something like this:

<META name =”description” content=”What are Meta Tags?”>
<META name =”keywords” content=”meta keyword tag, meta description tag, meta tag, metatag, search engine optimisation, seo”>

These help the search engines to instantly know what the page is about.   However, meta tags have been abused in the past and the way that Google uses meta tags has changed a lot.

I could have a web page on “cheap clothing”.  But put words in my meta tags like “gucci designer wear” to attract people.  Google now penalises a website that does this.   If your meta tags do not compliment your web copy, then you can be chucked off Google altogether.

So, although I would still always advise to use meta tags, as some search engines will still look at them, you need to write the copy on your website correctly.  Click here for my post on Writing Copy for Your Website.

Alt-Tags on Images

Alt tags are really important to include on your images.  Photographs and graphics cannot be seen by search engines, so we need to tell them exactly what is there.  This way Google will include your image in a Google Image search, and this is yet another way for people to find your website.  Don’t ignore ALT tags!

What is a Bot?

Also know as internet botsweb robots WWW robots

A bot is a piece of software designed to complete a minor but repetitive task automatically and on command, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone. The bot-master can give it a set of instructions and it will bring back answers. There are millions of reasons bots are used.

BOT is short for robot. The word robot comes from the word robota meaning literally “hard work” in Czech.

On the Web robot-like software performs precise searches to find information. They are automatic processes which interact with a web page; , a tool for trawling through data.

An example is the spider bots used by Search Engines . Google’s spider bot is named Googlebot. Crawling is the process by which Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index. As Googlebot visits each of these websites it detects links on each page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links are noted and used to update the Google index.

Types of Bots

Bots have a wide variety of uses in the internet. They can be used for commercial as well as malicious purposes.

Trading Bots: A programme used to automatically get the best deal, bet on line etc. It will execute certain command/s when a specific criteria is met. Bots can bid at a specific price, or a sell too. It automates a task that is repetitive for a human.

SpamBots: Spambots are bots that spreads content and advertising links all over the internet. Like those that post comments on blogs and forums. These spam bots also collect email addresses, phone numbers, etc

Hacker Bots: Bots that will browse the internet looking for systems with vulnerabilties, that can then be exploited by hackers to access and manipulate the victims files and folders.

Spybots: Collects data and information from a person (like surfing habits), website or company. Marketing firms or rival company may purchase this information.

Downloader Bots: A malicious bot that interferes with a user’s internet connection by automatically downloading entire web pages.

Website Scraper Bots: Website scraper bots reprint content from all over the internet without permission from the copyright owner.

Copyright Bots: On the other hand, copyright bots search the internet for copied or plagiarized materials in the hopes of getting monetary compensation from the guilty party/parties.

A Guide to Twitter

So, you think Twitter is all about telling the world what you are doing every five minutes? You would be wrong.

Twitter for Business

Twitter connects you to thousands and thousands of individuals who would be interested in you and your product. This could be worldwide, or you can stick to your country.

The point is that THEY have chosen to follow you, so they are already interested in you or in your product. Twitter is not right for every company, but can be a whole new world of trading for some.

Twitter attracts a different audience to your website and will grab the attention of people that have never even thought of searching for you on the net.

Rules for Tweeters

Twitter is not a place for hard selling, or constant reminders that your company sells the cheapest or best product. It is a place to engage and connect with people and bring people onto your web site. You have to be informative when you are tweeting. Interesting, even. You have to be helpful and give advice, then your followers will recommend that others follow you. It works very much like giving information on your web site. People look up that information and will appear on your site, ready to buy or recommend you!

Only people that are following you will see the tweets you tweet. But you must remember, many tweets are picked up by search engines, so keep it clean!

The most important thing about twitter is that you are generous to others. You should “retweet” tweets that you find interesting [Always start a "retweet" with RT space, then the users twitter name eg. RT @othertwitterer]

Your followers will follow many others, and the only way to get their attention is to give them something. Give them tips on something that might interest them. Chat to people or comment on their tweets.

Secondly, make sure you constantly refer to your website and link to pages of interest for your twitter friends. You must remind people what you do, they will not remember and you may just get them at the right time, after you’ve offered them some interesting information.

Case Study

James owns a MUG company. He has manufactures mugs in different designs – including campervans, animal designs, retro designs and lots more. He starts his account on twitter and calls himself @jamesmugs. [When you invent a twitter account your username would always start with an @ sign. If someone wants James to see their tweet, or wants to mention James in their tweet so that others will associate it with him, you they would always write @jamesmugs]

So where does James start?

James has to ask himself some questions. Who would be interested in his mugs? What would they want them for?

His mugs would usually be gifts for campervan lovers, animal lovers etc. He may even want to target online shops to sell his mugs. So firstly he must start to follow some people to start generating an interest.

James types #campervan into the search on twitter. Lots of tweets appear by people James doesn’t even know but they have written about campervans so they must be interested in that type of thing. James follows of few of these. Now he continues and types #cats, #dogs etc., following people that look like they may be interested in buying his product. Next he thinks that there might be some gift shops out their that would like to trade with him. So he searches for giftshops in the twitter search and finds a few to start following.

Hash tags

The next day, James finds that some of these people are following him back. He starts his first tweet “New mug design for split screen camper is ready for the shop floor #campervan” [The hash tags are used as 'keywords' for people to search on, like James was doing earlier].

Responding to tweets

He decides people might like to see the design he has created and takes a photo and uploads it using twitphoto. Someone called @bertie responds to his tweet “@jamesmugs Great mug design! Where can I get one?” James now has a chance to direct this person to his web site, so he does just that “@bertie Go on to my web site at www.jamesmugs.co.uk and you will see all my latest designs! Thanks for your interest!” This means all his followers and all @bertie’s followers has seen James reply!

But not only that, replying to people will encourages others to engage. Bertie is now a friend.

Shortened URLS

James has a page on his web site giving information on how his mugs are made. He directs his twitter followers to this page by creating a new tweet “See how my mug designs are hand crafted in our shop in the Cotswolds http://bit.ly/bjH60G“. [The "shortened" web address shown here is a shortened version of where James actual page is. This stops him from writing more that the 120 words that a tweet requires. Writing long URLs can annoy follows and this just keeps it clean and tidy. James uses the web site www.bit.ly to shorten his links before he posts them on twitter].

Re-tweeting

The most important thing about twitter is that you are generous to others. This means they will be generous to you. You should “retweet” tweets that you find interesting [Always start a "retweet" with RT space, then the users twitter name eg. RT @othertwitterer]

A new follower called @ninetynine retweets his mug making tweet. They have put “Cool designs! RT @jamesmugs See how my mug designs are hand crafted in our shop in the Cotswolds http://bit.ly/bjH60G“. This means all of @ninetynines followers can see the tweet!

James is really pleased with his first retweet and knows the rule is always to be polite and say thank you, as he would in everyday life! So he replies with “@ninetynine Thanks for the retweet!”

Now followers of @ninetynine may start to follow James as they are interested in his mugs. And so it goes on!

If somebody re-tweets you, follow them, it is polite.

Keep your tweets interesting

James’ followers are interested in different things. Some may be interested in campers, others in ceramics, others may be interested in artwork. James should tweet tips to engage with these people. May be some tweets on camping. Where he last went, where he used his mug. How are the mugs made? How does the artwork start out? Has he a new idea for a design? Each of these tweets will be interesting to someone different.

And the things you should avoid

Don’t buy followers or use any kind of technique to gain auto-followers. Be real.

You can use an scheduler like HOOTSUITE, but you must keep it real. Don’t repeat a tweet over and over, although you should retweet your tweets sometimes. Not everyone will of seen it the first time round.

New Businesses : Choosing a Website Address

The first step to getting on the Internet is choosing a ‘website address’, or to provide some common terms for it: ‘domain’ ‘ URL’ (Universal Resource Locator) or ‘Internet address’.

Things you should think about when choosing a web address:

  • Is it as easy to type as possible?
  • Does it reflect your website or business?
  • Is it easy to remember, even if your name or your firm’s name is not?
  • Does it look confusing when you write/type it out?

I, personally, feel that a domain name that matches your company name, and ALSO says what the company does, is important. The name that you use in your advertising is the name that you should register on the Internet, as that is the first thing that people will try in their browser.

Example: There are two choices for Potters Wands, in the UK: potters.co.uk – which is very likely to have gone – or potters-wands.co.uk. The latter would explain what the website is about/selling.  Keywords in your domain name play an important part on surfers finding your website.

A descriptive domain is good for two reasons:

  • advertising – if you had the domain across your van/car people would see that Potters sells wands, without having any more descriptive writing at all.
  • search engines – search engines pick up on the word ‘wands’ within your domain name and this will be used in search results.

Short or Long?

I would choose a shorter name if I could get one that is meaningful. Avoid names over 67 characters. Apart from the fact that people might not be able to remember such a long name it is also chore to type it, hard to fit it on your car/van or confusing when you try to tell people what it is and need to spell it out.

Shorter names may be easier to type: slightly longer domain names may be easier on the memory.

Should you get a hyphenated name?

Search engines see hyphens as spaces therefore potterswands.co.uk would be seen as one word, where as they would see potters-wands.co.uk as two.   Search engines will easily parse out the keywords within the address, but should this domain name be potter swands or potters wands?

Hyphenated names are sometimes easier on the human eye; people can distinguish the words in the URL. You can see in a glance that www.potters-wands.co.uk sells wands. However, people are very used to typing ‘alloneword’ names. And verbally un-hyphenated names are easier to get across.

.CO.UK versus .COM

If your audience is the local community, or you only deliver in your own country, then it makes sense to get a country-specific domain eg. .co.uk, .ca

If your site could benefit from an international audience then go for a .com.

The “.org” extension actually describes a nonprofit organisation.

A .net – usually an Internet company, .uk.ltd – if you are a limited UK company.

Some would settle for the “.com” extension and no less, as this is the default that people would use on hearing a company name, and they would therefore type it into their browser.  It was originally for commercial companies, however any size or shape uses a .com today.

Conclusion

It really depends on how you want to bring in your audience. If you are going to concentrate on Search Engines, use a domain name with keywords.

If you are going to use brochures, vans and flyers try a shorter domain name so that people will easily remember it and tap it into their browser.

If your first choice domain name is taken, or is going to be confusing without, use a hyphen.

Facebooks new ‘Timeline’ will replace your Profile and Wall pages, it merges the two together. It shows the story of
your facebook life in reverse-chronological order. Think of it as a blog, something which you are probably used to
seeing online.

Do I have to move to Facebook Timeline?
YES! As of January 2012 Facebook has rolled out the new Timeline to all users – “rolled out” meaning that different users will get it at different times. You can view how your timeline will look for 7 days, before it goes permanent.

What will show up on my Timeline?
All of your status updates, photo albums, tagged photos, friends, jobs, marital status and all other information that you’ve recorded in your profile during your time on facebook. All those things that your friends could see (if you let them) anyway.

What happens to NEWSFEED?
Nothing. This will stay exactly the same. The only thing that changes is the way others see your profile.

Can I change who can sees what is on my Timeline?
Hover over a timeline object and you will see two icons in the top right corner.
Clicking on the PEN will give you the option to hide the object from the timeline, delete the post (if it is yours) or untag yourself. You can UNDO any hidden items straight away.

Can I restrict who sees what on my time line?
Each object that you have put on facebook will have a small grey world object next to the date it was posted. Click on this and you will be able to edit who sees what.

I have been on timeline for a while now, since it first came out. And I love it!

Go and see my timeline.

Internet Hoaxes

The first thing I do when I receive an email that says “Donate Money“, “Enter your details” or “See what happens when you send this on” is open Google and type the subject of the email followed by HOAX. It usually returns something that confirms my suspicions that it is complete rubbish. Don’t be fooled!

A FEW OF THE LATEST HOAXES ARE LISTED BELOW:

Cash Back Scams

This message warns shoppers to check their receipts before leaving the check-out at Sainsbury’s and other UK stores because many people are being caught out by a scam in which unscrupulous cashiers add unauthorized cash back requests to transactions and pocket the cash rather than give it to customers.

Example

Subject: CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS/THIS IS NOT A JOKE PLEASE READ

CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING THE CHECK-OUT

I bought a bunch of stuff, over £150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of £40. I told her I didn’t request a cash back & to delete it. She said I’d have to take the £40 because she couldn’t delete it. I told Her to call a supervisor. Supervisor came & said I’d have to take it.. I said NO! Taking the £40 would be a cash advance against my Credit card & I wasn’t paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn’t delete it then they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of £20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the Electronic Pad must be defective.

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective because she NEVER offered me the £40 at the beginning. Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Milford , Sainsburys last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn’t give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn’t look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for £20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK!

My co-worker called Sainsburys who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this. This is a new scam going on. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in the queue.

Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards!

This is NOT limited to Sainsburys; they are one of the largest retailers so they have the most incidents.

I am adding to this. My husband and I were in Sainsburys and paying with credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card signer he just happen to notice there was a £20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We really didn’t think anything of it until we read this email.

I wonder how many “seniors” have been, or will be, “stung” by this one????

To make matters worse …THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LOCATION!!!

BEFORE LEAVING THE CHECK-OUT……..CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!!!!!

THIS COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE. CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE LEAVING THE STAND. I’VE SEEN PEOPLE DO JUST THAT. NOW I’LL START! PASS THIS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS, KIDS, LOVED ONES.

Advice: There is no credible evidence to suggest that such scams are currently taking place in the UK. If the scam described was as common and as widespread as implied in this warning email, there would certainly be news and police reports available that discuss the issue. In fact, there is no mention of such scam attempts currently taking place in any credible UK based media outlets.

Boycott Petrol Stations

The following chain letter was seen being distributed between British email addresses in 2008.

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it

We are hitting 106.9 p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1.10 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the ‘don’t buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn’t continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of >an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here’s the idea:

For the rest of this year DON’T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It’s really simple to do!!

Now, don’t wimp out on me at this point… keep reading and I’ll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)… and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) … and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it… ..

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That’s all. (and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE

It’s easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

Advice: If you receive this or a similar message, please do not forward it to your friends and colleagues. Forwarding unsolicited chain letters wastes time and bandwidth.

Sector Zero

This virus hoax is a variant of the Virtual Card for You hoax that has been spreading across the internet for some years. Although malware has been distributed disguised as postcards and ecards in the past, the claims that the malicous code can “destroy sector zero” of the hard drive or ‘burns’ the hard disk are false.

The text of the hoax reads as follows:

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee . This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital info rmation for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title:

‘You’ve received a Post Card from a Family member’.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don’t open any mails with subject: ‘A Post Card from’. As soon as you get the mail, delete it!! Even if you know the sender!!!

Please pass this mail to all of your friends.

Forward this to everyone in your address book. I’m sure most people, like myself, would rather receive this notice 25 times than not at All

Another version of the hoax reads as follows:

FW: Read about this virus

Don’t know if this is true but better to be on the safe side.

I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!

I checked snopes.com, and it is for real!!

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled “POSTCARD,” regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which ‘burns’ the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called” POSTCARD,” even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it.!Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

Advice: As usual, you are urged not to pass on warnings of this kind, as the continued re-forwarding of these hoaxes simply wastes time and email bandwidth. It is possible that you may receive a hoax via email with a file attached. Obviously, such file attachments should be treated with caution as they may be virus infected. Sophos recommends deleting virus hoax emails, whether they contain file attachments or not.

Bill Gates is sharing is Fortune

Subject: PLEEEEEEASE REEEEEAD! IT WASON GOOD MORNING AMERICA TODAY SHOW…

Dear Friends,

Please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill Gates is sharing his fortune. If you ignore this you will repent later. Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an effort to make sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used program, Microsoft and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.

When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will track it (if you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period. For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you $245.00, for every person that you sent it to that forwards it on, Microsoft will pay you $243.00 and for every third person that receives it, you will be paid $241.00.

Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your address and then send you a cheque.

Advice: This is a hoax, Bill Gates isn’t sharing his fortune via chain letter, why would he? No merger between Microsoft and AOL has been announced. AOL are Microsoft’s main competitor. If they were to merge, you would have seen it in the headlines a thousand times over. Microsoft cannot track the chain letters you forward.

MSN is closing down

Two examples:

“Hey it is Andy and john the directors of MSN, sorry for the interruption but msn is closing down. this is because too many inconsiderate people are taking up all the name (eg making up lots of different accounts for just one person), we only have 578 names left. If you would like to close your account, DO NOT SEND THIS MESSAGE ON. If you would like to keep your account, then SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. This is no joke, we will be shutting down the servers. Send it on, thanks. WHO EVER DOES NOT SEND THIS MESSEAGE, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE CLOSED AND YOU WILL COST ?10.00 A MONTH TO USE. SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS or REPLAY. COPY THE WHOLE EMAIL. GO BACK TO YOUR INBOX AND CLICK ON NEW. AND PASTE THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION”

“hey everyone, i dont normally send this sort of stuff out but had a look on the internet and its actually true . On the 1st of november , we will have to pay for the use of our MSN and email accounts unless we send this message to at least 18 contacts on your contact list. It’s no joke if you don’t believe me then go to the site (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1189119.stm) (It is an offical BBC News Release) and see for yourself.

Anyways once you’ve sent this message to at least 18 contacts, your msn dude will become blue. please copy and paste don’t forward cos people won’t take notice of it”

This hoax message is one more in a long line of similar hoaxes that warn that MSN is changing its free services. If MSN was considering charging for its standard MSN Messenger and email services, they would certainly not base its decision on how many times a message was sent to others. Such claims are ridiculous. EVEN THE WEB LINK IS NOT GENUINE!

There is nothing on the MSN site that confirms the story. I would advise you to delete messages like these, rather than forward them on.

Advice: Ignore any messages regarding this hoax, and please do not forward it to your friends and colleagues. Forwarding unrequested chain letters wastes time and bandwidth.

WTC Survivor

There are several versions of this hoax.

The text of the first version of this hoax reads as follows:

I received this from a reliable family friend this morning. 10/28/01 BIG TROUBLE !!!! DO NOT OPEN “WTC Survivor” It is a virus that will erase your whole “C” drive. It will come to you in the form of an E-Mail from a familiar person. I repeat a friend sent it to me, but called and warned me before I opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can’t even start his computer! Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not not all.

If you receive an email called “WTC Survivor” do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll files) from your computer. This is a serious one.

The text of the second version of this hoax reads as follows:

During the next several weeks be VERY cautious about opening or launching any e-mails that refer to the World Trade Centre or 9/11 in any way, regardless of who sent it. PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, “WTC” STANDS FOR THE WORLD TRADE CENTRE. REALLY DANGEROUS BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL OPEN IT RIGHT AWAY, THINKING ITS A STORY RELATING TO 9/11!

BIGGGG TROUBLE !!!! DO NOT OPEN “WTC Survivor” It is a virus that will erase your whole “C” drive. It will come to you in the form of an E-Mail from a familiar person. I repeat, a friend sent it to me, but called and warned me before I opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can’t even start his computer!

Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all. So, if you receive an email called “WTC Survivor”, do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll files) from your computer.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE

Domain Registry of America Hoax

Subject: Domain Registry of America

I’ve had numerous letters from this company calling themselves “Domain Registry of America” asking me to renew domains that I know are not registered with them.

“As a courtesy to domain name holders, we are sending you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to expire in the next few months. When you switch today to the Domain Registry of America, you can take advantage of our best savings. Your registration for: domainname.com will expire on March 31, 2006. Act today!”

They are apparently also sending out emails asking you to renew your domain.

Advice: DO NOT SEND THIS COMPANY ANY MONEY!

Life is beautiful Hoax

Subject: URGENT! VIRUS!

This information arrived this morning, from Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who accesses the Internet.

You may receive an apparently harmless email with a PowerPoint presentation called “Life is beautiful.pps.”

Advice: Ignore any messages regarding this hoax, and please do not forward it to your friends and colleagues. Forwarding unrequested chain letters wastes time and bandwidth.

Jamie Bulger Hoax

This chain letter has been circulating since January 2001 – and refers to a real crime. It started when UK courts decided to grant the murderers anonymity for the rest of their lives.

Do you recall this incident – it had national news coverage:

On February 12, 1993 a small boy who was to turn three in March was taken from a shopping mall in Liverpool by two 10 year old boys. Jamie Bulger walked away from his mother for only a second and Jon Venables took his hand and led him out of the mall with his friend Robert Thompson.

A Guide to Spam

What is SPAM? Spam is basically all unsolicited commercial email (UCE) and unsolicited bulk email (UBE) that the recipient does not ask to receive or want to receive. Spam is the Internet version of unsolicited telemarketing phone calls. They are trying to sell something, up their website hits or take your money.

Spammers harvest email addresses by scanning the internet and creating lists for spamming.

Most of us get hundreds of spam messages in our inboxes, and with the tricks that spammers are using to undermined anti-spam filtering software, it is hard to stop. Here are just some of the tricks that spammers will use:

WATCH THOSE LINKS …

Link to Search Engine, instead of Spammers Web site

What it does: Instead of including the URL for a spammer’s web site in the spam message, a spammer will provide a link to a specific search engine query that will return the spammer’s site at the top of the results.

Phishing
Creating a replica of a legitimate web page to hook users and trick them into submitting personal or financial information or passwords.

What it does: Scammers who are phishing trick users into visiting an imitation of a legitimate web page by disguising the true destination of a URL in their messages. They do this by embedding an image that looks like plain text. The image displays the URL of the site that they are imitating. However, when the image is clicked, the user is taken to the scammer’s imitated site.

Redirecting to a different URL

What it does: Instead of just putting, for example, ‘mycheapdrugsite.biz/c3/index.html’ in a spam message, spammers are hiding their destination sites within freely available redirects, such as yahoo and MSN.

What you see is not what you get …

What it does: Use the onmouseover event to change a URL so that, when clicked, the user is taken to an unexpected destination.

Hiding web addresses

What it does: Uses URL encoding to hide URLs. (See also the trick called Enigma.)
Example: %-style: http://%77%77%77%77.3%65%653–%69%6c11%6c%69–3%6c%69%6c%6c.%6f%72%67/ &;-style: http://www.sgc.org/

Enigma

What it does: Uses URL encoding to hide URLs.

Example: http://7763631671/obscure.htm http://0xCeBF9e37/obscure.htm http://0316.0277.0236.067/obscure.htm http://3468664375@3468664375/o%62s%63ur%65%2e%68t%6D

Splitting a web address

What to do: To prevent a URL from being recognized as a URL it is split into two parts with instructions to the reader to put the two bits back together.
Example: type http://www the the following URL in your web browser address bar: .somesite.com/page1/page2/content.htm

Camouflaging Links

What it does: Like Invisible ink, but instead of using identical colours (e.g. white on white), it uses very similar colours.

Example: (The colours 1133333, 123939, and 423939 are chosen to be very similar without being the same.)

Invisible Link

What it does: Uses white text on a white background containing words designed to confuse a filter.

Bogus login

What it does: Uses URL username@host syntax to disguise a URL.

REARRANGING WORDS …

Microdot

What it does: Breaks up a spammy word by inserting a single letter in the middle.

Example:
No cred K it? The looks like No credKit?

Nonsense

What it does: Large nonsense words are designed to subvert CRC-based spam identification.

Example:
crecrephaswukutugucrovazichonuprixisluwephimajoq

No Whitespaces

What it does: Since many languages separate words with spaces, and since many spam filters do the same, this spammer decided that replacing spaces with something else was a good idea.

Example:
DidAyouFknowNyouMcanBgetVprescriptionVmedications prescribedTonlineTwith NORPRIORRPRESCRIPTIONRREQUIRED! WeZhaveztheXlargestLselectionLofNprescriptionsNavailableZonline!
LowestzPrices — NextzDayxDelivery

Random Sized Letters

What it does: Uses very small (size 1) font to hide bogus text. (See also The black hole.)

Black Hole

What it does: Uses font size 0 to break up words with zero width spaces.

Foreign Characters

What it does: Replaces letters with numbers or uses nonsense accents.

Example: V1DE0 T4PE M0RTG4GE Fántástìç — eárn mõnéy thrôugh unçõlleçted judgments

Spaces

What it does: Inserts spaces between letters to make words unrecognisable.

Examples from the wild: M O R T G A G E F*R*E*E V’I'A’G'R’A O*N*L*I*N*E

Splitting Words

What it does: Uses a table to send words through as individual letters that are arranged top to bottom, but read from left to right.

USING HTML ..

Style Tags

What it does: Enclose text within <style> tags to hide it from the user and confuse filters.

Frame Tags

What it does: Using the <noframes> tag, the spammer can hide text and break up words.

Example: Ere<frame><noframes>ywl55</noframes></frame>ctions

Marquee Tags

What it does: Using the <marquee> tag, the spammer can hide text in a tiny, unobtrusive square.

Example: <marquee bgcolor=”white” height=”8″ width=”8″>Did you ever play that game when you were a kid where the little plastic hippo tries to gobble up all your marbles?</marquee>

Title Tag

What it does: This is another way of hiding text in an HTML email by placing it in the <title> which is unlikely to be displayed by the email client.
Example: <title>dinosaur reptile ghueej egrjerijg gerrg</title>

Comment Tags

What it does: Splits words using HTML comments, pairs of zero width tags, or bogus tags.

Examples from the wild:

  • milli<!– xe64 –>onaire
  • Fi</n>nd N</n>ew </n>Fri</n>end</n>s
  • Vi<b></b>agra
  • F<XYZ>r<XXYA>ee

Tags

What it does: Inserts a piece of current news in a bogus HTML tag.
Example: <Despite statements last week from chief U.N. inspector Hans Blix that full cooperation was expected from Iraq, Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri lashed out at the United Nations in a 19-page letter to Secretary- General Kofi Annan written in Arabic. In it, Sabri repeated previous claims that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction and that the inspections are just a false pretense for the United States and Britain to attack his country. Sabri assailed U.N. Security Council resolution 1441, adopted November 8, that called for Iraq to give immediate, unfettered access to weapons inspectors. Iraq “is being subjected to terrorism for more than 30 years from international and regional powers,” he wrote. “And Iraq’s under a daily aggression represented in the terrorism of the U.S. and Britain through the imposition of the no-fly zones.” Iraq has shot at U.S. and British aircraft repeatedly in the no-fly zones since they were established after the Persian Gulf War, and coalition aircraft have fired on Iraqi bases in response. In the most recent action, coalition aircraft struck a mobile radar system Saturday in the southern no-fly zone, according to the U.S. Central Command. The Iraqi News Agency said the aircraft fired on civilian and service facilities. After Iraq fired on U.S. and British planes last week, U.S. officials said the attacks constituted a “material breach” of Resolution 1441, which could trigger a meeting of the U.N. Security Council at which the United States could call for military action against Iraq>

Hidden Form Field

What it does: Hiding text by placing it in the name of a hidden form field

Example: Get The <font color=”#FF0000″> LOWE<input type=”hidden” name=gfrtde>ST PR<input type=”hidden” name=zawsxd>ICE </font> On Your N<input type=”hidden” name=plkmju>ew Car September 15, 2003: Another example came in from Darren J. Young that uses the value tag and fills it with a phrase from current events: <input type=hidden value=”The Los Angeles Film Critics on Saturday picked ‘About Schmidt,’ the drama starring Jack Nicholson, as the year’s top movie, splitting the two major critics’ awards so far as the 2002 Hollywood movie awards season heads into a pivotal week with more honors ahead.”>

HTML

What it does: Uses HTML entities instead of letters.

Example: &#87;&#97;tc&#104; &#68;ogs &#115;&#108;u&#114;p&#32;you &#110;&#103; &#103;&#105;&#114;&#108;&#115;&#32;p&#117;s&#115;

Javascripts

What it does: Keeps HTML body of email in a Javascript that fires when the email is opened.

HTML Page

What it does: The entire email consists of a small HTML page with an image enclosed in a single hyperlink.

Example: <html>
<img src=”http://www.your-info-station.com/Sla/chalkboard.gif”>
<div><a href=”http://www.your-info-station.com/Sla/eb.php?x=52c”>
<img src=”http://www.your-info-station.com/Sla/pitch.gif”>
</a></html> April 29, 2003: Scott Schram points out that some instances of this are being sent with valid but unrelated text before and after the image.

OTHER TRICKS …

Ratware - Is software that spammers use to automate spam campaigns, coordinate spam services, and generate, send and track spam messages.

What it does: Many spammers use sophisticated ratware to randomize the content of each campaign. This is done to fight content-based checks by making messages unique. Spammers create these messages by adding template variables to the message. The ratware then replaces the templates with content.

Adding Odd Words in Subject Fields

What it does: Adds a legitimate, but odd, word at the far right of the subject line (typically preceded by lots of spaces and tabs). The word is designed to poison a Bayesian filter and alter the spam’s hash value.

Example: Subject: FEATURED IN MAJOR MAGAZINES algorithmic

Two Part Message

What it does: Sends two-part MIME document. The text/plain part contains bogus text. The text/html part contains the spam message.
Example: ——=_NextPart_001_2D3DF_01C29D73.26716240
Content-Type: text/plain;
The modes of letting vacant farms, the duty of supplying buildings and permanent improvements, and the form in which rent is to be received, have all been carefully discussed in the older financial treatises. Most of these questions belong to practical administration, and are, moreover, not of great interest in modern times. Certain plain rules, may, however, be stated. The claims of successors to the late tenant should not be overlooked; it is better for the tenure to be continued without break, and therefore the question of new letting ought rarely to occur.
——=_NextPart_001_2D3DF_01C29D73.26716240
Content-Type: text/html;
<p><b><font face=Arial>Now is the perfect time to get a mortgage, and we have a simple and free way for you to get started.</font></b></td> September 15, 2003: This trick seems to be getting more common.

Basic Introduction to Twitter
